Director

The Environmental Innovations Initiative brings together researchers, scholars, and students to develop new ideas and innovative solutions for our global environment, maximizing Penn’s distinctive interdisciplinary strengths, building collaborations across disciplines, and creating a catalyst to spur new areas of inquiry. Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Research, the Director will work with the Faculty Director and Associate Director to lead and grow the Initiative.

Key responsibilities:

  • Directing the operations of the EII office, including supervising three full-time staff members.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director on developing and executing a visibility strategy.
  • Supervise the Program Manager’s management of student programming and office management.
  • Oversee a suite of data-informed projects managed by the Research Coordinator.
  • Cultivating collaboration with Penn’s faculty, centers, institutes, and offices across campus.
  • Maintaining relationships with the leadership of each of Penn’s 12 Schools.
  • Leading core engagement programs like the EII Faculty Fellows program and the Internal Advisory Committee.
  • Representing Penn in local, national, and global events and activities.
  • Leading a set of activities designed to ensure impact and outcomes in local research activities with key partners throughout Penn.
  • Participating in external networks such as the International Sustainable Campus Network and the IVY+.

Program Coordinator

The Program Coordinator leads outreach programs and events aimed at public engagement and education and provides ongoing guidance for student programs affiliated with the Initiative. Reporting to the Director, this role also supports communications and administrative efforts.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work to ensure the delivery of efficient and excellent public programming on and off campus, including events during Climate Week and Earth Week, as well as the Penn presence at global fora. Support the Associate Director in the implementation of the Environmental Innovations Initiative’s visibility strategy. Help maintain fresh, vibrant content for social media and the newsletter and help to grow an alumni group affiliated with the Environmental Innovations Initiative.
  • Lead the Environmental Innovations Initiative’s student engagement. Act as the administrative point person for Climate Leaders @ Penn, a graduate-level peer empowerment group, Penn Climate Ventures, an undergraduate group and Enviro-lab, a workshop for graduate and professional students. Use these models to envision impactful and inclusive programming for more students.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Environmental Innovations Initiative, including scheduling, ordering supplies, managing event logistics, and ensuring the timely completion of financial paperwork. This will require the use of Workday, the Penn MarketPlace, Concur, and other institution-specific platforms. This work will fluctuate through the year, become more intense, for example, during Climate Week.
  • Oversee the Integrating Sustainability Across the Curriculum program, a program that pairs student research assistants and faculty in a collaborative effort to incorporate sustainability into coursework.
  • In coordination with the Director, Associate Director, Research Coordinator, and Penn Sustainability, manage the distribution and analysis of the Climate Change Survey, as well as the dissemination of the key results.
  • Hire and manage student assistants as needed.
